## **Quick Answer:**

A trash pump is a pump built to move dirty water containing solids and debris that could clog a standard water pump. It is commonly used for construction drainage, mine dewatering, floodwater, and wastewater. Depending on the design, it can pass materials such as sand, mud, leaves, and small stones.

## **What Makes a Trash Pump Different From a Regular Water Pump?**

The main thing that makes it different is the size of the solid it can pass.

In the case of a regular water pump, the water has to be clean or contain very few debris. A trash pump has wider internal passages plus an impeller designed to help large solids to pass through without repeated clogging.

The model of the pump determines how large those solids can be. For example, [DEFU’s DJ Series](https://www.defucc.com/product/dj-series-self-priming-centrifugal-sewage-pump/) contains models that can pass solids up to 76 mm (or about 3 inches), or solids. These pumps have a semi-open impeller along with a replaceable wear plate to handle abrasion and debris.

That makes a trash pump a type of solids-handling pump, but it doesn’t mean you can pump anything through it. The maximum solids size listed for the pump still matters.

## **How Does a Self-Priming Trash Pump Work?**

A self-priming trash pump can remove air from its suction line and begin drawing water from a source below the pump.

However, the liquid should be in the pump casing before the startup phase. Once you have it running, the pump will fill the casing with the retained liquid as air enters via the suction line. Then the air will be separated and discharged until the right amount of vacuum forms to pull water into the pump.

This is useful when the pump needs to sit above a pit, sump, or excavation rather than down in the water. DEFU’s DJ Series, for example, has a maximum published suction lift of 7 m, while its TX/TH and JT/JU lines reach around 7.6 m.

Self-priming doesn’t mean dry-priming, though. Starting with an empty casing can stop the pump from priming and may damage components. Air leaks in the suction line can cause the same problem.

JT JU Self Priming Sewage Pump

JT&JU series Non Clog Self-priming Sewage Pump is the standard for industrial and sewage applications.

## **What Types of Trash Pumps Are Available?**

Trash pumps can be grouped by how they’re driven and how they handle the water.

A diesel trash pump is common on construction sites, mines, and remote projects where grid power isn’t readily available. A diesel engine also makes it easier to package the pump as a portable or trailer-mounted unit and move it wherever drainage is needed.

Electric models make more sense where a dependable electrical supply is already available. They remove the need to store and refuel diesel and can work well in fixed installations.

Some manufacturers offer both options for the same pump family. DEFU’s DJ Series, for example, is available with a diesel engine, electric motor, or as a bare pump, allowing the drive arrangement to match the installation.

You’ll also see submersible solids-handling pumps used for dirty-water jobs. Unlike a surface-mounted [self-priming pump](https://www.defucc.com/product/tx-th-series-water-pump-self-priming-sewage-pump/), a submersible unit sits directly in the water and therefore doesn’t have to draw liquid up a suction hose.

## **Trash Pump vs. Dirty Water Pump: What’s the Difference?**

A dirty water pump is generally intended for water containing smaller suspended particles, while a trash pump is built to pass larger debris.

No universal solids-size cutoff exists between them, though. The limits you get depend on the pump, meaning it’s important to check the manufacturer’s maximum solids passage rather than go by the name alone.

For instance, a dirty water pump can be the right option for rainwater containing small particles or silt. But if you’re pumping water with construction debris or stones, a trash pump is going to be the ideal fit.

A trash pump still isn’t the same as a [slurry pump](https://www.defucc.com/product/mamhml-slurry-pump/). Water with a high concentration of abrasive solids may require a pump designed specifically for slurry service.

## **What Can a Trash Pump Handle?**

Trash pumps are made for water that would be troublesome for an ordinary centrifugal water pump.

Typical examples include muddy water, sand, silt, leaves, small stones, and other debris washed into pits and drainage areas. What matters is whether the material fits through the pump’s specified solids passage and whether the pump materials can withstand it.

That can vary even within one manufacturer’s range. [DEFU’s JT Series](https://www.defucc.com/product/jt-ju-sellf-priming-sewage-pump/) can pass solids up to 76 mm, while its JU Series is rated up to 31.75 mm. The DJ Series reaches 76 mm on certain models as well.

So don’t assume every 4-inch or 6-inch trash pump can pass the same debris. Check the individual model.

## **Where Are Trash Pumps Used?**

Construction sites are one of the most common places you’ll find them. Rainwater and groundwater collect in trenches, excavations, foundations, and sumps, often bringing soil and loose debris with them.

[Mine dewatering](https://www.defucc.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/mine-dewatering-pump-manufacturer.md) creates similar conditions on a larger scale. Water entering an open pit can contain sand, clay, drilling cuttings, and other abrasive material, so solids handling and easy maintenance become particularly important. DEFU lists its [dewatering pumps](https://www.defucc.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/types-of-dewatering-pumps.md) for these kinds of abrasive mining conditions and offers self-priming models with solids passage up to 76 mm.

Trash pumps are also used for flood drainage, municipal work, wastewater, agriculture, and other jobs where the water isn’t clean enough for a standard pump.

## **How Do You Choose the Right Trash Pump?**

Start with the material in the water. Find the largest debris you realistically expect the pump to encounter and choose a model with enough solids clearance to pass it.

Then look at how the pump will be installed. If it needs to stay above an excavation or sump, check its self-priming capability and maximum suction lift. For remote sites, a diesel-powered unit may be more practical, while an electric pump can suit locations with reliable power.

Maintenance matters too. Debris eventually finds its way into places you don’t want it. Features such as removable covers, replaceable wear plates, and easy access to the impeller can make clearing a blockage or replacing worn parts much quicker.

Most importantly, don’t choose a trash pump from its inlet diameter alone. Two pumps of the same nominal size can have very different solids limits and construction.

For construction or mine dewatering, DEFU offers [self-priming pump ranges](https://www.defucc.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/taxonomy/product_cat/centrifugal-pump.md) with diesel and electric configurations and solids passage reaching 76 mm on applicable models. Check the actual debris, installation conditions, and power available at your site before deciding which configuration fits the job.
